| EARLY IMAGES OF THE MERRITT PARKWAY |
Project Summary
The Merritt Parkway is a 37 1/2 mile limited access highway with two lanes in each direction and dozens of beautifully designed period bridges.
Starting in Greenwich and continuing through Stamford, New Canaan, Norwalk, Westport, Fairfield, Trumbull, Bridgeport and Stratford, the parkway is
known for its scenic layout, its uniquely styled signage, and the architecturally elaborate overpasses along the route. It is designated as a National
Scenic Byway and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Project Nos. 50-204, 50-206, 144-178, and 144-180: The Department of Transportation, through funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment
Act, began construction, in August of 2009, for resurfacing, safety and bridge improvements on the Merritt Parkway in the towns of Fairfield and Trumbull.
The project extends from the Congress Street overpass in Fairfield to Exit 52 in Trumbull and includes restoration of 13 bridges and a complete bridge
replacement over the Mill River between Exits 44 and 46 in Fairfield.
Long term work zones will be installed in some locations to allow for road reconstruction and bridge work.
Lane widths in these areas will be reduced to 10 feet with only 1 foot shoulders
